Change your life, Change your shoes

I was given a set of oils for christmas. I am usually an acrylics kind of gal, but have been wanting to 'have a go' at some oils for some time ......... This one has been painted on canvas paper (about 21 cm x 21 cm) which proved a really good substrate. Its not so good with acrylics so I thought I would give it a try with oils instead. The rough surface is ideal for slapping on oil colours and I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. I had no idea oils were so much fun!! Those that know me will not be surprsed by the subject matter, since I 'love' shoes. They are works of art in themselves and I am after having a go at painting some cha-cha heels next :-)

I like this very much! I would have never thought that a pair of lace up shoes could be so sexy.

It's great to see an example of your fantastic draftmanship. xx

I’ve always thought you’d enjoy oils:) Your acrylic style is very bold and fast, which you can continue doing with the oil, but you then have the option of working into it a bit more, blending tones and textures…it looks like that’s exactly what you’ve done here. I love the lightness of touch on the backs of the shoes and they way you’ve suggested the inner edge of the shoe on the left with a simple line…the contrast between a line like that and the blended shine of the leather is fantastic, just what great oil painting is all about…

This is a wonderful painting, technically extremely well done, I can’t wait to see the real thing :)

Great subject matter too, a well loved pair of shoes…makes me want to slip them on and walk around in that persons life for a while…I wonder if they’re my size ;)

What a beautiful painting. I find it sad as well, not sure why.

Hi Penny…Perhaps it’s sad because you find the shoes abandoned, whoever once wore them has gone?...then again, perhaps they’re waiting to be filled…? The beautiful thing about a subject like this is, different viewers can draw something very different and very personal from it :) the more I look at it, the more I like it Sue :) Top painting :)

Thanks everyone. And thanks G for your comments. I always feel a bit shy about writing about the 'meanings' behind my paintings and tend to avoid it but this work is intended to convey a sense of poignancy and hope and regret and I think you and Penny nailed it. :-) I'm going to get this properly mounted and framed and maybe enter it for the Summer exhibition this year?
I am certainly keen to pursue futher ideas in this vein since I am finally over my post-christmas painting slump...and I'll be putting oil paint and brushes on my birthday list :-)

I think this would be a great piece to enter for the Summer Exhibition, it could fit in with the ‘Making Space’ theme in an interesting way and it looks like it would be small and light to lug around the bars of London…;)

I think it's cheating that you upload a photo of some shoes to your blog and pass it off as a painting!
