Lost myself in a giant canvas this morning. I am painting a super-size version of this:The canvas is 40 x 40 inches and almost overwhelms the easel. My first task is to build in the rich red/gold background. This is physically hard work as I put on gold first than work red into the wet paint until I almost work it back off the canvas again. I am going to do this a few times to build in the texture.
This is the result of the first working. Two hours of hard labour :-)
The photo is at an angle as the studio isn't big enough for me to get far enough away from it to fit.
Out with the old, in with the new.

Lots of interesting texture on there, I like it, you’re off to a flying start :) Are you going to rotate the canvas as you build up the following layers or keep the general flow of the texture horizontal? Looking forward to watching this one progress, I think you’re moving in a really exciting new direction with this one :)
Of course you could just leave it as is a la Rothko 8-)
Thanks for the encouragement Graham..I think I'll be keeping it horizontal for now. And Miss T...I see where you're coming from with the Rothko...but in the words of someone who I can't remember..."Always be a first rate version of yourself, and not a second rate version of someone else".
Plus he's better than me ;-)
